Youwe is a full service internet agency based in Rotterdam (NL), Groningen (NL), Amsterdam (NL), Kiev (Russia) and London (GB). They have a strong focus on providing Magento e-commerce related services.

Since 2000, they have been working for clients like Grolsch, Heidelberg, SNS Bank, 24Kitchen, Spinning Records, PPG and the Dutch postal company Postnl.

Design brief
Rob Wiek contacted me with a simple brief; 'Provide us with a few re-designed pages of our corporate website Youwe.nl. Don't bother redesigning content.'

Design solution and Art Direction
I designed two versions, both based on Youwes existing brand guidelines.

Version 1 has a more traditional look&feel but with a lot of whitespace and well-balanced graphic elements. I also suggested a change in the typography to get a more consistent look channel-wide.

Version 2 used a more bold approach and freedom towards the current brand style.

Youwe choose to continue with Phase 2 with the Version 1 designs.

All webdesigns where made with Adobe Photoshop and with the Mobile First methodology in mind, where mobile designs where designed prior to the desktop version.

Although this usually is used because of the advantages in content presentation and sanitation (not part of this project), I used it primarily to make focus on great mobile website design.

Knorr.nl redesign website food brand Unilever

Picture 1 of 2 - Full webpage design for MailingCube CRM Software

Picture 2 of 2 - Introduction and index of the MailingCube CRM Software website

Rotterdam based Dutch Advertising Agency Emakina (formerly known as Suntzu) asked Dutch Freelance Senior Designer Michiel Nagtegaal to re-design the website of Knorr.

Knorr is one of many food brands by Dutch multinational Unilever. By the time Michiel was asked to revive the online design, the old Knorr website consisted of content in small boxes and no tasty food photography.

Design brief
An important part of the design brief was to combine the extensive amount of content with the new provided food photography.

Design solution and Art Direction
In contrast to the straight square boxes a dynamic swoosh was introduced, to respectfully show the product photography. Content becomes more and more important the more deeper a visitor comes in a website. So the vertical 'topvisual' becomes less wide, to make room for the content.

Being asked by Michael Klein, owner of webshop Goedkopermetled.nl, to design a Dutch webshop that would be the first in several more 'Goedkopermet' webshops, is always nice. It motivates me enormously if a project involves also creating a brand instead of just a quick logo.

The existing webshop Goedkopermetled.nl sells led lighting equipment. 'Goedkoper met' is translated in English to: 'Cheaper with' and refers to lower prices but in the case of Goedkopermetled, also to a more green and enviroment friendly alternative to regular lighting.

Webshop Goedkopermetschakelmateriaal.nl sells... well basically light buttons. But with all kinds of related products, a large database, large inventory and stock, it sure is a professional webshop which has something to offer.

I designed the shop with unknown future products in mind. Therefor the webshop design needed to be modular and possible to be easily extended.

Picture 8 of 8 - Greyscale quick mockup for the T-Mobile.nl Order Form Page

Early 2010 the main webshop of T-Mobile Netherlands was more than five years old. The need for a re-design was obvious. At that time, Senior Project Manager and owner of creative agency Conceptenzo, Roy Nikkelen had just successfully finished a major website re-design of KPN.com, one of the major Dutch telecommunication providers.

As a Freelance Online Designer I was part of Roy Nikkelen's small team that was responsible for the overhaul of the large KPN.com website.

Because of the nice and successfull cooperation on the project, Roy Nikkelen asked me to be part of the team that would re-design the T-Mobile.nl webshop. My role was to bring senior level Visual Design and specific Interaction Design knowledge into the team.

The brief
The briefing from T-Mobile to Conceptenzo was simple. Make the T-Mobile.nl website fresh and contemporary again. The old website frequently used borders, little white space and relatively small margins to communicate their content. That resulted in a boxed, limited and contained look and feel.

Testing proofed that users liked the way the site worked functionally and technically. As a result we focussed on Interaction and Visual Design to further enhance to user experience.

Solution / Art Direction
I envisioned a lighter and more spacious webshop. This is achieved by avoiding boxes, using more white space and margins around graphical elements and widening the header image. The presentation of content became much clearer, structured and without distraction.

Soon after the start of the project, the team recieved word that a new T-Mobile logo needed to be incorporated in the designs.

Solution / Functional Design
During the tests of the mock-ups it became clear that also the site map needed an update. By making a Functional and Interaction Design of a few of the most used pages (see the greyscale screens), navigational issues and issues with the location of information quickly became clear.

One the solutions was to introduce Sub-Homepages (Plaza's) to guide the visitor towards more in-depth information. Also the Checkout Process was rigorously changed.
