Illustration 'Double Click' on poster

Illustration, printed on a poster and framed as a birthday gift to former business partner

Illustration 'Double Click' is a self-commissioned design for a poster. The poster was a personal birthday gift to good friend, Marc.

The illustration was entirely made in Adobe Illustration and features the recipient of the birthday poster and his girlfriend.

Not only is the cartoon character a representation of my friend Marc, we also co-founded our web agency Supershift. As a reminder to not only work but also spend some time with your loved ones, the text says (in Dutch): 'Don't forget to double click your girlfriend'.

Marc has been married several years now to the girl in the picture, :)

Robeco is an international asset manager offering an extensive range of active investments, from equities to bonds.

As a Freelance Visual Designer I was asked to be part of a small team working on various improvements of the Robeco.nl Retail website.

Illustration services

Besides delivering new visual web designs of numerous webpages of Robeco.nl I also provided Illustration services.

Infographics

In 2017 five larger infographics where designed in Adobe Illustrator and Sketch.

Infographics 'We laten je geld praten' en 'Millennials' where entirely made in Adobe Illustrator.

Sketch has been used for the three, more recently made, variations of infographic 'Zo beleggen anderen' (first four images on the left).

The style had to fit within the brand style guidelines. Parts of the infographic where used in online campaigns.

Labor intensive

For each infographic approximately 40 hours of designing was needed.

Kids cartoon characters design for 'Tuimelaer' swim school

Picture 3 of 4 - One of the eight 'business cards' showing the strengths of each cartoon character. Anne is good at floating and swimming with clothes on.

Agency Helder Marketing asked illustrator Michiel Nagtegaal to re-design some print materials for one of their clients, Zwemschool Tuimelaer (Swimschool Tuimelaer).

Thinking beyond the briefing I proposed a creative concept where the level of progress of kids is visualized by cartoon characters. Each of the six cartoon characters has a different skillset, fitting the level of progress of each kid. They 'walk' the kids through the courses.

The dolphin, taken from the logo, was re-designed together with the logo itself and represents the ultimate goal of the swim courses.

The vector illustrations where made in Adobe Illustrator to ensure the quality in print as well as online.

'Icecream Jedi' is a colorful illustration on heavy paper depicting a human character eating an icecream in the sun.

The style is different from the other artworks by Michiel Nagtegaal and a bit of an experiment to move towards a more figurative style.

Posca acrylic paint markers are used to get the bright, sunny atmosphere and consistent color scheme.

  • 70cm x 50 cm
  • 27,5" x 19,6"

Invitation re-opening school 'Groen van Prinstererschool' Voorburg

Picture 1 of 2 - Front view of the invitation

Picture 2 of 2 - Back view of the invitation

My daughter Zoë (2013) attends the 'Groen van Prinsterer'-school in Voorburg, the Netherlands. In her first year the school finished an extensive 2 year renovation which involved moving all the kids to a temporary school nearby.

To celebrate the finished renovation and the move into the new building, a party for everyone involved was held. I was asked to design the invitation.

To symbolise the moving to and from the temporary location, I designed a looped road, with the 'old' school as a starting point and the temporary location as a milestone half way.

Page 2 of 2 of the hand drawn comic on the 750th anniversary of the Dutch city Delft

Back in 1996, I was 21, this was our winning entry for a yearly comic drawing contest. This year the contest had a theme that marked the 750th anniversary of the city Delft, which we lived in.

A friend, Robert-Jan Langenberg wrote the script. I did the drawings.

The comic pages where split in half and drawn on a A3 paper to ensure the crisp details. The use of color wasn't allowed so I used pattern stickers to add shades of grey.

We won the first prize.

When you become parents for the first time, you want it all to be perfect. Even the birthday cards.

With a graphic designer and an interior stylist as fresh new parents, this side project took a little longer to get to the finish line.

The house in the illustration depicts our house and the crane bird has special meaning to Janette and her family. The cats are cartoon characters of our two cats.
